Интервал времени с характерной продолжительностью в несколько млн. лет, в течение которого имеют место общее похолодание климата и неоднократные резкие разрастания оледенения материков и океанов (см. Эпоха ледниковая). Ледниковые эпохи чередуются с эпохами потепления и сокращения оледенения (межледниковьями). Последний четвертичный П.л. продолжается около 2,5-3 млн. лет.
